How to Read Grid Coordinates: What Do Latitude and Longitude Mean?

Every location on Earth can be identified using a set of coordinates. These coordinates use an imaginary grid of horizontal and vertical lines to pinpoint a specific place on the planet.

But do you know how to read them? And do you know what latitude and longitude actually mean?

In this guide, we’ll explain how to read grid coordinates and the difference between latitude and longitude. We’ll also show you how coordinates can be used to pinpoint a meaningful place — whether that’s where you got married, where you met your partner, your favourite holiday destination, or simply somewhere you never want to forget.

And, of course, we’ll explain how you can turn those coordinates into a beautiful piece of jewellery you can carry with you every day.

What Is Latitude?

Before we can understand how to read coordinates, it helps to understand the difference between latitude and longitude.

Latitude describes how far north or south a location is from the Equator.

The Equator sits at 0° latitude, while the North Pole is at 90°N and the South Pole is at 90°S.

For example, a location might have a latitude of 51°30'N, meaning it is approximately 51 degrees and 30 minutes north of the Equator.

What Is Longitude?

Longitude describes how far east or west a location is from the Prime Meridian.

The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, London, and represents 0° longitude. From there, longitude is measured up to 180° east or west around the Earth.

For example, a location might have a longitude of 2°29'E, meaning it is approximately 2 degrees and 29 minutes east of the Prime Meridian.

When latitude and longitude are used together, they can pinpoint a specific location on Earth.

How Do You Read Latitude and Longitude?

Latitude and longitude are commonly written in three different ways:

    • Degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS): 51°30'26"N, 0°07'39"W
    • Degrees and decimal minutes (DMM): 51°30.433'N, 0°07.650'W
    • Decimal degrees (DD): 51.5072°, -0.1276°

If you’re reading coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds, each degree is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is divided into 60 seconds.

For example:

35°44'27"N

This tells us:

    • 35° = degrees
    • 44' = minutes
    • 27" = seconds
    • N = north of the Equator

The more detail you include, the more precise the location becomes.

How Accurate Are Grid Coordinates?

The precision of a coordinate depends on how many decimal places — or degrees, minutes and seconds — you use.

As a general guide, one degree of latitude is approximately 111 kilometres (69 miles). However, the distance represented by a degree of longitude varies depending on where you are on Earth.

Breaking coordinates down into minutes and seconds allows you to identify increasingly precise locations.

For example, 35°N gives you a broad position, while 35°44'N provides considerably more detail. Adding seconds, such as 35°44'27"N, allows you to pinpoint a much more specific location.

This is why coordinates are so useful: even a small number of additional digits can make a significant difference to the accuracy of a location.

How Can You Find a Location Using Coordinates?

One of the easiest ways to find a location from its coordinates is to enter them into a mapping service such as Google Maps.

Simply enter the latitude and longitude into the search bar, and the map will show you the corresponding location.

You can also use services such as what3words to identify locations in a different way. Rather than using latitude and longitude, what3words divides the world into small three-metre squares and assigns each square a unique combination of three words.

What Can You Use Grid Coordinates For?

Because latitude and longitude can be used to identify locations around the world, there are countless ways you can use them.

Coordinates can be particularly useful for remembering a place that has special meaning to you.

For example, you could save the coordinates of:

    • The place you got married
    • Where you met your partner
    • The location of your first date
    • Your favourite holiday destination
    • A family home
    • A memorable hiking spot
    • Somewhere you visited on a special occasion

Coordinates can even be useful in practical situations. For example, adding your home coordinates to your dog's identification tag could provide another way of identifying where they should return if they ever go missing.
