Couch to 5K: How to Start Running Today

Have you ever wanted to start running but didn’t know where to begin? Maybe you haven’t exercised in a while and want to improve your general fitness, or perhaps you’re planning a charity run and aren’t sure which training plan to follow.

The Couch to 5K plan is designed specifically for beginners. Created by novice runner Josh Clark, it was originally made so his mum could get off the couch and start moving. The program runs over nine weeks, with three runs per week and rest days in between, making it suitable for almost anyone — regardless of current fitness level. Best of all, it’s completely free to follow.

The NHS endorses it as a great starting point for new runners and provides extensive information about the plan on their website.

Why Running is Good for You

Running isn’t just a great way to improve fitness — it also offers multiple health benefits:

    • Physical health: Improves heart and lung function, helps with weight management, and may increase bone density to protect against conditions like osteoporosis.
    • Mental health: Running can reduce stress and symptoms of depression. Achieving milestones like completing your first 5K boosts confidence and self-belief.
    • Low equipment needs: All you really need is a good pair of supportive trainers.
Getting Started with Couch to 5K
    1. Download the app or podcasts: Available for iOS and Android, the app or podcasts guide you step-by-step, telling you when to run and walk. The sessions include motivating music and voice prompts from the narrator, Laura.
    2. Plan your runs: Decide when and where you’ll run. Start on flat, easy terrain to build stamina.
    3. Stay safe: Wear reflective clothing in low-light conditions, and choose well-lit routes. Be cautious if using headphones, staying aware of cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Celebrate Your Achievement

By the end of the program, you’ll be able to complete a 5K run! Celebrate your accomplishment with one of our laser-engraved shoe tags. Made of stainless steel and 30mm wide, they fit all adult and teen running shoes or trainers. We have tags engraved with 5K10K, half-marathon, and marathon — perfect for marking milestones or gifting to a running enthusiast.

You can find more information about the Couch to 5K plan on the NHS website. The Couch to 5K app is also available on both the iTunes and Google Play stores.
