What Should an Epilepsy Medical Alert Bracelet Say?

Choosing what to engrave on an epilepsy medical alert bracelet can be challenging, especially when you're working with limited space and want to make sure you've included the information that's most important to you.

To help give you some inspiration, we've analysed engraving details from hundreds of epilepsy medical bracelets — and we've recently added another year of customer data to our research.

So, what do people actually choose to engrave? From the wording used to personal contact details, here's what our customer data shows.

Start with a Clear Condition Label

For most people, the simplest way to communicate their condition is to state it clearly:

Epilepsy

Our research shows that “Epilepsy” is engraved twelve times more often than “Epileptic”, making it by far the most popular wording.

Both terms can communicate the condition, but the overwhelming preference among our customers is simply “Epilepsy”.

Other phrases relating to seizures also appear in our engraving data, including:

Some customers choose to be more specific by including their seizure type, such as:

    • Focal Seizures
    • Focal Epilepsy

However, most customers keep their engraving simple with the word “Epilepsy”.

Custom Engraving Is a Popular Choice

While a standard “Epilepsy” medical alert bracelet provides a simple way to communicate the condition, many customers choose custom engraving so they can include additional information.

Custom engraving can give you space to add details such as:

    • Your name
    • An emergency contact number
    • Another medical condition
    • Other information that you feel is important

Our customer data shows just how popular these additions are:

    • 80% include a phone number
    • 50% include their name
    • 26% include another medical condition

Some customers also choose to include their date of birth as an additional form of identification.

An Emergency Contact Number Is the Most Popular Addition

Of all the additional information included in our epilepsy bracelet engravings, a phone number is the most common.

80% of customers include a phone number, compared with 50% who include their name.

An emergency contact number can provide a quick way for someone to contact a family member, friend or other person close to you if you're unable to do so yourself.

For example:

“ICE: 07XXX XXXXXX”

Using “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) can help make it clear that the number is an emergency contact.

Should You Include Medication Details?

Medication information is less commonly included in the epilepsy engravings we've analysed.

One reason you may want to consider the available space carefully is that medication and treatment details can change over time. Some customers instead choose to use the available space for more permanent information, such as their condition, name or emergency contact number.

However, some people may have information about a rescue medication that they feel is particularly important to communicate.

The right information to include will depend on your individual circumstances, so if you're unsure what would be most appropriate for your medical alert jewellery, speak with your healthcare professional.

What Should You Engrave on Your Epilepsy Bracelet?

Our customer data shows that there are several popular ways to approach an epilepsy medical alert bracelet. You might choose to include:

    • Your condition, such as “Epilepsy”
    • Your name
    • An emergency contact number
    • Another important medical condition
    • Your seizure type, if you choose to include it

For example:

“Epilepsy – ICE: 07…”

Or, for a more personalised option:

“Epilepsy – [Name] – ICE: 07…”

The right combination will depend on your individual circumstances and how much space is available on your chosen piece of medical jewellery.

A Simple Choice That Can Be Personal to You

Knowing what other people choose to engrave can make it easier to decide what to put on your own medical alert bracelet.

Our research shows that most customers choose the straightforward wording “Epilepsy”, while many also add a phone number, name or another medical condition.

Whether you choose a simple standard bracelet or create a custom engraving, you can use our customer data as inspiration when deciding what information is most important to you.
