What Should a Heart Condition Medical Alert Bracelet Say?

If you’re looking for a medical bracelet for your heart condition, you’ll need to decide what to engrave. You might want to include your condition, medication, an implanted device, or personal details such as your name or an emergency contact.

It can be difficult to know which information to prioritise, especially when engraving space is limited. So, we’ve analysed the engraving details from thousands of medical bracelets to see what people with heart conditions actually choose to include.

We have standard options for:

Heart Conditions

Implanted Devices

Anticoagulant Medication

You can also choose one of our hidden message wristbands or a custom engraved bracelet if you want to include more specific information.

1. Anticoagulants are the most common engraving

The most common detail in our heart condition bracelet data is information about anticoagulant medication.

Customers tend to use simple wording such as “On Anticoagulant” or “Blood Thinners”, rather than always naming the specific medication.

Where a medication is named, generic names such as Apixaban, Rivaroxaban, Clopidogrel, Warfarin, Edoxaban and Dabigatran are around four times more common than brand names such as Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix, Coumadin, Lixiana and Pradaxa.

A simple engraving such as “On Anticoagulant” can therefore be a useful way of communicating this information without using too much engraving space.

2. Implanted devices are also commonly included

Many customers choose to include details of an implanted device, particularly:

    • Pacemaker – 12%
    • ICD – 4%
    • S-ICD – 4%

It can be useful to make healthcare professionals aware of an implanted device in an emergency. We also see engraving for stents and heart monitors, although pacemakers and ICDs are much more common.

3. Atrial Fibrillation is the most common specific condition

We’ve seen a wide range of heart conditions engraved on medical bracelets, but Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is the most common, accounting for 8% of the engravings we analysed.

This is followed by the more general wording “heart disease”, which appears in 5% of engravings.

Although some people choose to include their exact diagnosis, many customers prioritise medication or implanted device information instead.

4. Extra space? Add your name or emergency contact

If you have space left on your bracelet, you could add your name or an emergency contact number.

Our data shows that:

    • 34% of customers include a phone number
    • 24% include their name

A phone number can provide a quick way for someone to contact a loved one in an emergency.

What should you engrave?

For many people with a heart condition, a simple engraving might include:

    • On Anticoagulant
    • Atrial Fibrillation
    • Pacemaker

Or, if you have more space, you could combine information:

AFib – On Anticoagulant – ICE: 07XXX XXXXXX

The right engraving will depend on your individual circumstances and the information you want healthcare professionals to know. If you’re unsure what to prioritise, your doctor or healthcare professional can help.
