How to Help Your Child Remember Important Details on the First Day of School

The first day of school can be daunting for any child. They're faced with new faces, unfamiliar routines, and often a new classroom or even a completely new school environment.

As children get older, they naturally begin to seek more independence. They may want to pack their own school bag, make their own lunch, or even travel to and from school on their own.

As a parent, finding the right balance between encouraging independence and ensuring their safety can be challenging.

While many children quickly learn practical tasks such as preparing for the school day, they can still struggle to remember important information such as:

    • Their locker combination
    • Their lunch or canteen code
    • Their student ID number
    • The bus number they need to catch
    • Emergency contact information

So how can you give your child the independence they crave while making sure they have the information they need when they need it?

Think About Their Journey to School

Start by considering how your child travels to school.

If they walk independently, it can be reassuring for them to carry emergency contact information in case they become lost or are involved in an accident. Keeping an "In Case of Emergency" (ICE) contact handy means that you can be reached quickly if needed.

A simple solution could be a Write On Wallet Card stored in their backpack, providing easy access to important contact details without taking up much space.

Helping Children Remember Important Information

School life often comes with a surprising number of codes, passwords, numbers, and routines to remember.

Whether it's a locker combination, canteen code, student number, or bus route, these details can feel overwhelming during the first few weeks of term.

Writing them down can certainly help, but notebooks and loose pieces of paper can easily be misplaced. Having important information available in a place that's always with them can help reduce stress and build confidence while they settle into their new routine.

Wearable Reminders for Everyday Confidence

For some children, wearable reminders can provide an extra layer of reassurance.

Our Personalised Silicone Wristbands can be engraved with important details such as emergency contact information, bus numbers, locker combinations, or other reminders your child may need throughout the school day.

For families looking for a more discreet option, our Secret Message Silicone Wristbands feature engraving on the inside of the band. This keeps personal information hidden from view while remaining easily accessible whenever your child needs a quick reminder.

Unlike traditional jewellery, which may not be permitted under some school policies, silicone wristbands are lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear beneath a jumper sleeve. They can be particularly useful during those first few weeks while children are learning new routines and building their confidence.

A Longer-Term Option

If you're looking for something more durable, our Soul ID Bracelet offers a stylish alternative. The front can be engraved with your child's name, while the reverse can include useful information such as a locker combination or emergency contact number.

Available in a variety of colours, they can even be matched to school colours for a practical accessory that blends in with the school uniform.
