Climbing Safely With a Medical Condition: Tips & Advice

This month, I’ve spent a lot of time at our local climbing gym, learning how to safely belay so I can support my two girls with their climbing hobby. It got me thinking about climbing, medical conditions, and medical alert jewellery.

I’m a big believer in challenging yourself, but sometimes it’s important to adapt your approach. To help, I’ve worked with several experienced climbers and instructors to gather tips on climbing safely with medical conditions, and on choosing the right medical alert jewellery.

Whether you’re crack climbing outdoors or heading to your local climbing gym, the risks are different — but the key is planning ahead.

Supportive Climbing Communities

One thing became clear: climbers are generally supportive and health-conscious. I’ve spoken with instructors on both sides of the pond, and the common attitude is, “how can we make this possible?” It’s all about thinking through safety issues, and knowing you can find the help and support you need to get started.

My Climbing Test

So, how did I do? I’m pleased to say I passed! After an injury in Italy in 2014, my knees haven’t always been strong, but I’ve learned moves that shift the load onto stronger muscle groups and give my arms a rest.

I can’t wait to help my girls reach the top — and I hope to see you down at the climbing gym too!
