In the UK Mothering Sunday was originally a day where Christians would visit the mother church at which they were baptised. Over the years it has become more of a celebration of mothers and mother figures to say thanks for all of their hard work in bringing up children.
The day always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter. This year, in the UK, Mothering Sunday falls on 11th March. It is estimated that Britons spend on average around £40 - £50 on their mums on this special day.
In the United States and many other global destinations Mother’s Day this year is Sunday 13th May. The reason they celebrate on a different day is because in other countries it has never had the religious background like it has in the UK.
