Why is the Zebra the Symbol for EDS?
When it comes to raising awareness for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, the zebra has become an unmistakable symbol.
In this blog, we’ll explore why the zebra represents this rare condition and how you can incorporate the zebra into your jewellery to raise awareness.
But first ... what is EDS?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the body’s collagen, leading to symptoms such as hypermobile joints, fragile skin, and chronic pain. Because EDS is a “invisible illness” and challenging to diagnose, awareness and understanding are key to improving the lives of those living with EDS.
Have a read of our other blog on why it’s important to wear a medical bracelet if you have EDS.

The Origin of the Zebra
The main reason the zebra is used to represent EDS comes from a common phrase in medical training: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” Doctors are taught to look for the most common explanation first, meaning rare conditions are often overlooked.
EDS, being relatively rare and frequently misdiagnosed, is considered a medical “zebra”. By adopting the zebra as a symbol, the EDS community proudly claims its uniqueness while raising awareness about the need for better recognition and understanding.

Using the Zebra Symbol in Your Jewellery
The zebra can be utilised in many ways to show your support or awareness to those living with EDS. You could choose to have black and white cord with your medical alert bracelet, or you could wear one of our zebra awareness ribbon pins. Our zebra necklaces are also a great choice for raising awareness to EDS. Check them out here:

The zebra stands as a bold, visible reminder that rare conditions exist, and those living with this condition deserve recognition, care, and compassion. Wearing or sharing this symbol is more than awareness — it’s a celebration of resilience and the unique strength of the EDS community.
