Should I buy my mum or dad a medical alert bracelet for Christmas?

Should I buy my mum or dad a medical alert bracelet for Christmas?

Your parents may have reached the age where they have multiple medical conditions, and could find themselves in a vulnerable situation when they are out and about.

Or, like me, you may live some distance away from your mum and dad, but want to make sure you are contacted straight away should anything happen. But is a medical alert bracelet a thoughtful gift?

My parents have reached the age where they have most of the things they need. A lifetime of possessions often prompts comments around Christmas like “Oh there’s nothing I really need” or “Why not do something nice for the kids instead?”

But they are missing the point. I am looking for something thoughtful for THEM. A present that shows them how much I care, and encourages them to take proactive steps to look after their health.

How to make a medical alert bracelet a successful Christmas gift

You’re in good company if you are thinking of a medical bracelet for your mum or dad. You would be surprised how many requests we get to make a medical ID bracelet as a gift.

So how can you make the gift as successful as possible? What’s the best way to go about it? Our top 3 tips are:

1) Go for a gift card if you can. A sense of control is so important in making this a successful gift. Because if they don’t like it … they won’t wear it. A gift card gives them the greatest chance of getting exactly what they are looking for.

But some families prefer a physical present (rather than a gift card). What should you do then?

2) Get them involved in choosing the style.

If your parents are like mine, the time spent choosing something together is often remembered as an important part of the gift. Make an afternoon of it with a cup of tea and time to relax while you browse.

Think about what jewellery styles they enjoy, the colours they tend to wear, and whether they prefer something practical or pretty.

3) Let them decide on the wording. On this point, I would recommend staying involved if you can. Gently remind them if you really want your mobile number engraved (if there’s room), or keep them focussed on the medical information that will make the most difference in a tricky situation. But its got to be a two way conversation.

Pay attention to any sensitivities they have around particular wording. No one (of any age) wants a label. Help them craft some text for engraving that is informative, yet discrete. And keep in mind that you may need to list a phone number or refer to a wallet card for detailed information.

Good luck with your Christmas gift buying, and enjoy the holidays! If you have any tips or comments to share about how to make a medical alert bracelet a successful gift for your mum or dad, please add them below…
