The history behind the blue circle

For a long time, the grey ribbon has been the symbol for diabetes, but in 2006, the International Diabetes Federation called for a new symbol that would be recognised by the whole world. Kari Rosenfield and her daughter Clare had just the symbol – the blue circle.

By December 20th, 2006, the United Nations passed “World Diabetes Day”, which resulted in the blue circle being seen as the worldwide symbol for diabetes.

So, why a circle?

The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents totality, wholeness, original perfection, the self, the infinite, the eternity, and timelessness. Most significantly for the diabetes campaign, the circle symbolised unity to support a UN resolution on diabetes and the need to remain united to make it difference.

The circle could also represent the unbreakable bond between all people living with diabetes, or all the different types of diabetes uniting as one.

The UN has also stated that a circle was used because “the circle is a frequent occurrence in nature and because myriad cultures over time have used the circle to symbolise life, mother earth, and health”.

Why blue?

The IDF explains that the colour blue is used because it “reflects the sky that unites all nations and is the colour of the United Nations flag”.
